Free port

A system of “free port” rules in Montevideo since the Port Services Act N° 16,246 came into effect 4th May, 1992. This makes Montevideo into the first and only terminal of the South American Atlantic coast which precinct is a zone of customs exclusion. The rule states that the circulation of goods in Montevideo “shall be free” and that it “will demand neither authorizations nor formal proceedings”. It also states that “during its permanence in the customs enclosure port, goods shall be exempt from all fees and surcharges pertaining to importation or due to the same”.
